Easy Fox’s Steam demo AI costs top $1,000 a day, studio says
Easy Fox says AI services for its free Steam demo, Teach My Little Sister How To Drive, cost over $1,000 a day. The four-person studio has taken out a bank loan after demo player numbers grew more than twentyfold; an early closure remains undecided.

Live AI services keep incurring costs throughout a free demo.
Easy Fox’s free Steam demo for Teach My Little Sister How To Drive incurs more than $1,000 a day in AI costs, according to the studio’s October 7 development update. The studio says it has taken out a bank loan to keep it running. For independent developers building live AI conversations into a game, the case highlights an expense that continues throughout a free trial.
Why the free Steam demo keeps incurring AI costs
Players sit in the passenger seat and use a microphone to coach their sister through a driving lesson. She responds and attempts to follow instructions, with mistakes forming part of the game's premise. Steam requires a microphone and broadband connection.
The four-person studio reports more than twentyfold growth in demo players over a month. It has raised the possibility of ending the demo early, but had made no decision in the announcement. The cost and borrowing are developer statements: no itemized bill or loan amount was provided. Player growth cannot be treated as a concurrent-player count or used to calculate a cost per session.
Gemini limits push the game toward a fallback model
Easy Fox says Gemini usage-limit errors have pushed the game toward an OpenAI fallback. Reported problems include lengthy replies, unnatural dialogue and incorrect driving instructions. Restoring Gemini access, improving the fallback and offering local models for sufficiently capable GPUs remain development work.
The studio's AI information page, updated August 27, describes the normal global setup: voice, game context and recent dialogue go directly from the game to external providers, with automatic switching when a connection is slow or unavailable. The October update describes heavier fallback use. The Chinese mainland version uses different services.
Will the demo close, and will players pay for AI tokens?
The team plans to include expected AI usage in the paid game's price, without a separate bill for each player's tokens. Steam currently lists January 2027; final pricing remains to be announced.
For a comparable project, demo duration, conversation frequency, peak demand and fallback quality belong in the operating budget. A one-time purchase also needs to support subsequent inference spending. This single studio's report does not establish the economics of every AI game.
